Lost At Sea…

The Merchant Seafarers’ Memorial by Brian Fell, at Cardiff Bay, South Wales. The inscription in the stone circle surrounding the sculpture reads:“IN MEMORY OF THE MERCHANT SEAFARERS FROM THE PORTS OF BARRY PENARTH CARDIFF WHO DIED IN TIMES OF WAR”Approach the sculpture from one side or from the rear and you see a hull section of a merchant ship resting on a beach or the ocean floor, torn from the rest of the vessel, the ship’s framing exposed to the sea or the elements. Walk around to the other side and you see the face of every human lost forever to the sea incorporated in that same hull section.

While being off uni for Easter, I have used the time to produce new drawn imagery, to be able to work from when I go back, these are a few fine liner oyster shells that I have drawn.

I have continued to experiment with natural dying. The results were several different shades of sand colour fabric. I then printed an image which was on my screen, based on textures of a shell I was drawing from. I then placed to pieces of my dyed fabric together and put it through the needle puncher. This is the result.
